What to check first in this record
What is released depends on the record, the dates, and the disclosure rules, including protections for third parties named in a record. Expect a record to be released with some material withheld where the rules require it, rather than expecting a complete file.
Keep a note of every filter combination you try, including the ones that failed. A failed search is only useful if you can prove you already tried it. Records disagree more often than stories do, and that is useful: a disagreement points to a transfer, a renumbering, or a variant spelling, each of which can be tested.
Reading what the record actually says
An entry that gives a town but no county, or a camp but no town, is deliberately vague or locally obvious. Local knowledge, not a global search, usually settles it. Do not extract a single line and discard the page. The page, the form, and the neighbouring entries are what give a line its meaning.
Read for the unit, the ship, or the station as well as for the person. A person entry makes sense only inside the unit entry that surrounds it. An entry that names a place but no unit, or a unit but no date, is a partial clue. Use it to frame the next search, not to close the question.
Common traps in this record type
When every avenue returns the same dead end, the dead end itself is information: it tells you where the record system stops, and that boundary is worth noting. Do not confuse a record that is hard to find with a record that does not exist. Difficulty is a property of the search, not of the record. A search in the wrong language of indexing, modern terms for period records, will fail silently. Use the period terms the catalogue itself uses.
What to open after this one
From here, the productive move is usually sideways, into a different record set for the same dates, rather than forwards into the next date. When two next steps present themselves, take the one that can disprove something, not the one that can only confirm. Disproof strengthens a timeline faster. Leave the timeline in a state a stranger could retrace. That stranger, in six months, may well be you.

It is general educational information only, not personal professional advice, and it offers no record lookup service and no determination of any individual's service.
